India’s Music Streaming Boom Is Growing. But Is It Really Paying?

India’s Music Streaming Boom Is Growing. But Is It Really Paying?

India is one of the fastest-growing digital markets in the world. We lead in internet users, smartphone adoption, and content consumption. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that we’re also becoming one of the world’s largest music streaming markets.

But one statistic from the latest EY and IMI report caught my attention.

Consumer comparison during the Music Streaming Boom between free and premium music streaming experiences

Despite millions of Indians streaming music every day, monetisation remains surprisingly low.

That is a marketing lesson worth understanding.

The report projects that India will have 28 million paid music subscribers by 2028, a significant jump from just 4.6 million in 2022. On paper, that’s excellent growth. But the reasons why people subscribe—and why they don’t—paint a fascinating picture of consumer behaviour.

Why People Actually Pay for Music Streaming

The biggest reason people pay?

Not exclusive content.

Not celebrity playlists.

Not AI recommendations.

It’s simply “No Ads.”

Closely followed by the freedom to play songs in any order and better audio quality.

The Biggest Barrier to Music Streaming Subscriptions

Now look at the other side.

The number one reason people don’t subscribe is equally revealing:

“YouTube has all the music I need and it’s free.”

How video platforms influence the Music Streaming Boom and music discovery in India

That single insight explains why premium adoption in India has always been challenging.

Indian consumers are extremely value-conscious. If they can access 80-90% of the experience for free, convincing them to pay for the remaining 10-20% becomes incredibly difficult.

The platform preferences are equally interesting.

YouTube narrowly leads Spotify as India’s preferred music platform, followed by Amazon Music and JioSaavn. Unlike many global markets where audio-first streaming dominates, India continues to consume music alongside video.

That changes how marketers should think about music marketing.

For artists, labels, and brands, YouTube isn’t just a streaming platform—it’s also a discovery engine, a search platform, and a storytelling medium.

The bigger lesson extends beyond music.

Every subscription business today faces the same challenge.

Whether it’s OTT platforms, AI tools, productivity software, newsletters, gaming, or education platforms—the question remains identical:

Is the premium version solving a real pain point, or simply offering extra features?

Consumers don’t pay because something is “premium.”

They pay because it removes friction.

Spotify removes ads.

Netflix removes interruptions.

ChatGPT Plus removes waiting.

Amazon Prime removes delivery anxiety.

The successful subscription businesses are selling convenience, not features.

Final Thoughts on India’s Music Streaming Boom

As marketers, we often focus too much on acquisition.

But sustainable businesses are built on retention and recurring revenue.

The Indian music industry has already won attention.

Now it needs to win willingness to pay.

And that is a far more difficult marketing challenge.
