India’s Startup “Cheetahs” Are Getting Faster — and More Diverse
India’s startup ecosystem is no longer just about chasing unicorns. A new category is quietly becoming important: the “Cheetahs.”
According to the 2026 Hurun India Cheetah Index, India now has 110 high-growth startups that fit the Cheetah definition — more than double the 54 recorded in 2021, marking a 104% increase in five years. So, what exactly is a Cheetah?
More importantly, what does the rise of these companies tell us about the future of the Indian startup ecosystem? The Indian startup ecosystem is growing at an incredible pace.
A Cheetah is an unlisted startup founded in 2000 or later, valued between $200 million and $500 million, and considered likely to reach unicorn status within five years. India currently ranks third globally, behind the US and China. But the more interesting story isn’t just the number.
The startup map is expanding

Bengaluru leads with 36 Cheetahs, followed by NCR with 25 and Mumbai with 16. Together, these three ecosystems account for around 70% of the cohort.
At the same time, the sectors are becoming increasingly diverse. The next wave isn’t only fintech, SaaS or e-commerce.
We’re seeing momentum across:
🚀 AI
🛡️ Aerospace & Defence
🌱 Clean mobility
💼 Services
The Indian startup ecosystem is growing at an incredible pace.
That diversification matters. Because a mature startup ecosystem isn’t one where every company becomes a unicorn.
The Indian startup ecosystem is growing at an incredible pace. It’s one where more companies have the potential to become meaningful, scalable businesses.
The investor ecosystem is evolving too The index highlights Anand Chandrasekaran as the most active angel investor, backing 11 Cheetahs, followed by Kunal Shah (8) and Ramakant Sharma (7).
Institutional capital is also finding its way into this emerging middle — companies that may not yet have the headline valuation of unicorns, but are potentially building the foundations for the next generation of them.
The bigger takeaway

For years, India’s startup narrative was: Startup → Funding → Unicorn.
The Cheetah Index suggests the journey is becoming more nuanced. There is now a much larger pool of companies sitting between “promising startup” and “unicorn and that middle matters.
The Indian startup ecosystem is growing at an incredible pace. Because some of India’s biggest companies of the next decade may not be the ones making the most noise today. They may be the 110 Cheetahs quietly building, scaling and preparing to run.
India’s startup ecosystem isn’t just producing unicorns anymore.
It’s building a much bigger jungle. 🐆🇮🇳
